Champions League returns to ANKARA, at Halkbank’s home after three years

An important competitor

Halkbank ANKARA's Dutch opposite Nimir Abdelaziz announced his thoughts on the Berlin match.

The Dutch star stated that the opponent is a good team and he continued:

“To play against Berlin will be another strong game! They take part in the Champions League every year with good results! So its going to be a big battle again. We have to fight and we want to show our improvement after the game which we have lost in Poland.”

Berlin Recycling Volleys

1. Group B was the crowd puller of the first leg of the Champions League: Nearly 4.000 people witnessed the incredible 0:2 comeback win of the BR Volleys against Hebar Pazardzhik in their home-venue the Max-Schmeling-Halle, Berlin. The second most popular game was also a Pool B game, Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie’s 3:1 win against Halkbank Ankara was visited by 2.750 spectators. Now, the opponents and the venues change.

2. Over 2.000km of travel: Ankara is the furthest destination in southeast Europe the BR Volleys have ever travelled to for a CEV Champions League game.

3. Unbeaten in the national leagues: Both BR Volleys and Halkbank Ankara have won all their games in the national championship so far. Both teams only lost 3 sets, but Ankara played 8 games while the BR Volleys played 6.

4. It’s been 5 years: The BR Volleys last played against a Turkish team 5 years ago. During the 2016/17 CEV Champions League, they played against Istanbul BBSK in play-off 12 (2:3 and 3:2 + winning the Golden Set). Since this face-off Turkish and German teams never met again because they were always seeded in the same pool for the drawing of lots.

5. A total of 52 points: That’s the number of points that Timothée Carle and Marek Sotola scored on the first gameday. Carle is Top-Scorer of #CLVolleyM with 27 points, while Sotola is ranked on 4th position with 25 points.

"One or the other may have thought that the draw went well for us this year. But anyone who saw the match between Zawiercie and Ankara knows that we really can't talk about luck of the draw. Not least, a signing like Abdel-Aziz's shows the potential and quality of Ankara. Halkbank is top-notch, because with the Argentine Bruno and Gülmezuglo, the team is also really strong on the outside spiker positions. In addition, Matic is a real presence in the middle block. "

"Somehow this game was suddenly over far too quickly. It feels like a not finished job. We knew that Nimir could tip the match again at any time when he goes to serve. But this ending hurts. We fought so well and got back into the match. That makes it even more bitter that we couldn't push it to the tiebreak."

Johannes Tille
setter of Berlin Recycling Volleys

"We are really disappointed today. We were aware of Ankara's serving quality, but we were supposed to have the class to stand up to it. Aces on the lines, as we were unfortunate to concede a few today, can happen. But our task was to control the middle of the field in the reception. Maybe we missed experience, because we have to finish the fourth set without question and win it. There are no excuses. We missed clarity in our actions. We came back strong again, but unfortunately that's not worth anything today."
