VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN
- After overpowering Tours with 3:0 one week ago, VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN has the chance to make it to the quarterfinals even with a 2:3 defeat. This would be the first time since 2018, when today’s CEO Thilo SPÄTH-WESTERHOLT used to be a libero for the “HÄFLER”.
- While TOURS VB won the league game against St. Nazaire in straight sets earlier this week, Friedrichshafen had to suffer a tough loss at home against SWD powervolleys DÜREN with 1:3.
- After two games in FRIEDRICHSHAFEN, the “HÄFLER” return to ratiopharm arena Ulm/Neu-Ulm for the second time during the current Champions League competition. The first time on November 10th was also against a French team. Friedrichshafen won 3:2 against MONTPELLIER HSC after being two sets down.
- Before the first match in TOURS the French had to suffer setter Zeljko Coric’s injury during warm up. He twisted his ankle and needed to be replaced. His appearance on court on Wednesday is questionable.
- If FRIEDRICHSHAFEN makes it to the next round, they would meet familiar faces. The Polish giants from JASTRZEBSKI Wegiel – FRIEDRICHSHAFEN’s opponent during the group stage -  already waits for the “HÄFLER” or TOURS in the quarter finals.
TOURS VB

- The Tours VB, led by its Brazilian coach, Marcelo FRONCKOWIAK, knows that this Wednesday will be their last chance to survive in the 2023 CEV Champions League Play-offs.

- The middle-blocker Thiébault BRUCKERT will be on the trip to Germany and will finally meet again his partners, who have been absent from the field since mid-November.

- Leandro NASCIMENTO DOS SANTOS, another middle blocker, is still injured and will miss his third Champions League match this season.

- On the other hand, Zeljko CORIC, setter and captain, also injured in the first game in Tours, will be on the trip against Vfb FRIEDRICHSHAFEN to support his teammates and hope to push them to take the 3 points necessary to play a golden set.

“We have to play this game as it was a final. We did very well in TOURS, but this doesn’t mean anything if we don’t finish the job at home. We have the chance to write history for the club and even for the players. We have to seize this opportunity on Wednesday.”

Dejan VINCIC
Captain VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN

"Even if we won the first match we have to start from scratch on Wednesday. We need our best game to win against TOURS again. It’s an outstanding chance to be one of the best eight teams in Europe and we need support from the stands to prevail.”

Thilo SPÄTH-WESTERHOLT
CEO and former libero VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN

" We have our last opportunity to stay on the way for the next round in Champions League, for that our mission is really hard where we firstly need to win the game with 3 points ( 3x1 - 3x0) and confirm in an eventual golden set.We could to have an important result in French league last weekend even with the absence of our captain Zeljko Coric, now we are not favorite anyway we know that we can play better than the first game! Let’s fight ! "

Match Report

VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN outperform TOURS VB

Article

After winning the game in TOURS 3:0, two sets were enough for VfB Friedrichshafen to make it to the quarterfinals. It’s the first time for FRIEDRICHSHAFEN since 2018 to be one of the best eight teams in Europe. The first set was Aboubacar DRAME NETO against the rest of the world. The French opposite overpowered VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN with eight spikes, one kill block and one ace to secure the first set for his team (25-21).

Zeljko Coric celebrated his comeback after his injury before the first clash of both teams one week ago, while VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN’s 2.12 giant Marcus BÖHME had to stay at home due to sickness.

The “HÄFLER” scored only 15 points in the second set, but starting with an ace from Michal Superlak, the home team gained more and more confidence. With some spectacular safes from libero Blair Bann, FRIEDRICHSHAFEN took set three and for four.

MVP Michal Superlak will be back in his home country Poland when VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN meets Polish powerhouse Jastrzebski Wegiel for the semifinals.

“We had a difficult start into the game and we allowed TOURS to control the game. After the second set we were faster and better. This was the second time in Champions League that we won a game after being two sets down and we never lost a five setter in this season. I’m very proud of my team.”

Mark LEBEDEW
Head coach VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN

“We believed in ourselves, even after losing two sets. We did an amazing job and I’m very happy to meet Jastrzebski Wegiel in the quarterfinals now and I really believe that we have a chance against them.”
