Match Report

Vasas Óbuda BUDAPEST v Developres RZESZÓW

Article

Defending Hungarian champions Vasas Óbuda hosted Polish powerhouse Developres Rzeszów in Budapest in their second match of the 4th round of the Champions League. The home team started the game really confidently, maybe even took their opponent by surprise in the first set. The Hungarians, led by their opposite Taylor Bannister, took the lead with a great overall performance after winning the first set (25:20, 1:0).

Rzeszów’s head coach Stéphane Antiga changed his opposite for the second set, as Izabella Rapacz came in for Gabriela Orvosova. The decision paid off, as Rapacz and middle blocker Magdalena Jurczyk led their team to a confident, four point lead in the second set. Vasas Óbuda didn’t give in easy, and equalized before the endgame with Karolina Fričová’s key attacks. Dramatic moments followed, as both teams had chances to close the set, but in the end it was once again the home team who came out on top, after a successful challange by their coach, Giannis Athanasopoulos (28:26, 2:0).
Rzeszów took an early lead in the third set as well, they looked determined to turn the game around. Jelena Blagojevič took the Polish team on her back with some of the most powerful attacks of the game and even tough Vasas fought until the end, Rzeszów won the third set and held on to hope (20:25, 2:1).

The visiting Polish team made sure to keep the same energy, as they quickly managed to build up a five point lead in the beginning of the fourth set. Fričova and Bannister did the job again for Vasas Óbuda as the home team equalized in the matter of minutes. Rzeszów responded quickly with some clever tips from Blagojevič and managed to hold on their lead this time, therefore forcing the fifth set in Budapest (20:25, 2:2).

Jurczyk came up with key points as the fifth set started with the visitors taking the initiative once again. Vasas Óbuda did their best to fight back and managed to score a few nice points, but Developres Rzeszów finished the job and won the game that lasted for almost two and a half hours (9:15, 2:3).

"This was the most difficult and most intense game of the season, we didn’t meet this kind of block defense before. We fought very hard, and altough we are not happy about we lost, we have to take this game as a reference and took out as much experience of it as we can."

Giannis Athanasopoulos
Head Coach Vasas Óbuda BUDAPEST

"I really liked the atmosphere here, but it wasn’t easy to play in this gym. We knew Vasas is a good team and we have to play really well for winning, buta t the beginnig we couldn’t manage the aggressive serves of our opponent, we had struggles in passing and in the spike. We lost self confidence so I hanged some players on the court and it worked out from the third period. I’m very happy about the comeback of my team, but I also have to congratulate to Vasas."

Stéphane Antiga
Head Coach Developres RZESZÓW
