Vasas Óbuda BUDAPEST v Volley MULHOUSE Alsace

Article

Vasas Óbuda hosted Volley Mulhouse Alsace in Budapest in the third round of group A of the CEV Champions League. The home team started the game better, but Mulhouse equalized quickly with Helene Rousseaux’s powerful attacks. Vasas reacted quickly, led by Karolina Fričova in attack, and Kata Török in defense and built a seven point lead approaching the end of the set. With an amazing turn of events, Mulhouse scored eight points in a row, took the lead and won the set with a minimal difference (23:25, 0:1).

Christelle Tchoudjang-Nana led her team in the beginning of the second set as Mulhouse took an early lead. Vasas was never going to give in easily, the home team fought back and equalized with their captain, Ayshan Abdulazimova scoring smart points on the slide. The end of the set was once again tense and full of emotions, but Amanda Coneo’s masterclass proved to be decisive, as Mulhouse doubled their lead (23:25, 0:2).

Vasas Óbuda wanted to show they deserve more in this match and started the third set with fierce energy. This time it was the home team’s outsider hitters who took the center stage, as Kata Török and Yuliya Boyko scored one point after another, with middle blocker Orsolya Papp also contributing with important attacks. Vasas’s efforts came with a prize as the home team took the third set with relative ease (25:16, 1:2).

The home team continued in the fourth set, where they left off before, with Abdulazimova showing the way to her team with three key blocks. Vasas played better than their opposition, but by making six service errors they kept Mulhouse in the set as the endgame approached. Even though Vasas had a set ball, the French side turned the score around once again, won the set and therefore took all three points from Hungary in an exciting game (24:26, 1:3).

"I’m very sad about the result, we had our chances in every set to win but we missed agressivity and sometimes maybe the quality to finish the sets after leading over 20. It didn’t help we couldn’t play official match since our last CEV CL game against Rzeszów, but now we have to stick together and try to play better, try to be a better team. These games help us to grow."

Giannis Athanasopoulos
Head Coach Vasas Óbuda BUDAPEST

"If you can win three sets like we did, coming back from big deficit, it’s not coincidence. But I have to admit, to do that you also need luck, and we had it in some moments. It was a very tough game, I congratulate to Vasas also, the forced us to play on high level. I had to make some changes during the game, I’m happy that all of my players could add something tot he team. It was a great effort, we never gave up, we fought until the end. "
