Eczacibasi shut out Lokomotiv for second win in Pool D

    Article 9 December 2020

Eczacibasi VitrA Istanbul registered their second win in Pool D, this time in straight sets against Lokomotiv Kaliningrad Region. On Wednesday, the home team celebrated with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-22) victory over the Russian squad to top the current pool standings.

Eczacibasi made a flying start breaking into the first set wit 4-0 lead. The rest of the set was all about the home team with Tijana Boskovic leading the scorers on six points, including the winner for 25-17.

Eczacibasi stormed the second set on a 4-0 run as well. Only this time Lokomotiv fought back stepping up their offensive efforts and levelled the score at 10-10. A fierce battle unfolded through 21-20 Eczacibasi’s way, when the Turkish side scored three in a row to reach set point. The Russian opponents denied the first two, but then Boskovic hit the winner again to close it off at 25-22.

The third set followed an almost identical script: strong beginning for Eczacibasi, comeback for Loko, tough fight for the rest of the set and victorious ending for the home favourites. Only this time it was Chiaka Ogbogu’s kill block (fifth in the match) that put an end to the game at 25-22.

Chiaka Ogbogu was the best scorer with 13 points to her name and was named MVP of the match. Her teammate Tijana Boskovic and Lokomotiv’s Ekaterina Evdokimova (three aces, two blocks) scored 11 times each.

“As I have said before, we don’t have time to practice. But, match by match, we play better and better. We are turning back to our normal level. Today we played a good match, especially in blocking and defence we played better than yesterday. And I hope that tomorrow we can perform like this again.”

    Marco Motta
Head coach of Eczacibasi VitrA Istanbul

“After the five-set match yesterday, it meant a lot for us to collect another win. Our goal is to continue our road without any losses. To achieve that, we will keep the same focus level also against Dinamo Moscow.”

    Elif Sahin
    Setter of Eczacibasi VitrA Istanbul

“First of all, I want to thank my teammates. For us it was a difficult match, it was the second in a row in two days. However, this is a tournament and it is what it is. We made some mistakes, but I am happy for this game because we were playing without our main setter, without some other players and we had to quarantine earlier. So I am glad for this game and we will see what we can do tomorrow.”

Outside hitter and captain of Lokomotiv Kaliningrad Region
